Australia vs England, playing cricket to win The Ashes
Every 2 years, every cricket fan in the country goes into an uproar over the Ashes Cricket series.
What is The Ashes?
In 1882 Australia beat England at cricket for the first time. The Sporting Times published a sartirical obituary, stating that English cricket had died and the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia . Since then, England and Australia have played The Ashes Series every two years, for control of The Ashes. While The Ashes themselves, the burnt remains of a cricket stump from that first series, isn't actually handed back and forth (it is kept in the MCC Museum at Lord's, due to its age and fragility), nonetheless, cricket fans in Australia and Britain worry about whether or not their nation will retain The Ashes each time...
The Barmy Army
With such a polarising match, it should be no surprise that each nation has a large number of supporters who travel to the other side of the planet to watch the series. The English supporters are known as The Barmy Army, while the Australians are called The Fanatics.
As a British-themed pub, The Pig 'N' Whistle is happy to look after our English tourists who have come to see the matches every 4 years.
